Accreditation Update

By Kate Sims, Accreditation Liaison Officer

A man drives his convertible through a treasured national park. The top is down, the music is turned up, and the driver speeds happily along at 70 miles per hour.

Life is good!

What he isn’t aware of is that his catalytic converter is hanging down under his car, and every 100 yards, it scrapes the asphalt, sending sparks into the wilderness, causing forest fires. Finally, a woman in a car behind him catches up and honks her horn long enough so that the man turns around to see, with horror, the destruction he has caused behind him – a 100 mile strip of fires.

Perhaps this is a good metaphor for why the accreditation process is a good one!

Most of us are busy doing our jobs; we focus on serving our students and the community. This is what we should be doing.

However, every six years we’re expected to turn around and pay attention to what we’ve done, to see if we’ve created something wonderful or if we’ve set fire to the place without knowing it. This is a time of consciousness and self-reflection that is essential not just to our accreditation, but to the success of our college.

The Accreditation process, now known as the Self Evaluation of Educational Quality and Institutional Effectiveness (SEEQIE, or “seek-ee”) process is in full swing at Hawai’i Community College. The Self Evaluation Steering Committee (above) was trained by ACCJC in Oahu in September, and Standard Committees have formed and are meeting regularly.

Fall 2010, participants began the process of combing the college for information and evidence about how Hawai’i Community College is meeting national standards in areas of planning, budgeting, program review, assessment, resources and governance, to name a few.

In November, the whole college community will be tapped to take a survey about their experiences at the college. This survey is very important, and we ask that you take a few minutes to complete it. It will provide us with vital information about perceptions of how well our college is doing on the standards and will give the committees information to help them complete their portions of the Self Evaluation Report.

All are invited to participate in the SEEQIE process! If you would like to join in, please contact a member of the Steering Committee:
