HawCC’s First Home Energy Survey Professional Course

OCET completed the first Home Energy Survey Professional Course on October 15, 2011. In this course students learned the fundamentals of energy assessment.

A Home Energy Survey Professional (HESP) is certified to perform a visual walk-through evaluation of an existing home. Assessment areas include; utility billing history, building envelope features, heating, cooling and ventilation equipment, appliance and lighting characteristics, comfort complaints, visible moisture issues, and visible health and safety issues. A HESP is well trained to provide a fundamental energy assessment, identify problems and make basic recommendations for improving the home’s energy efficiency including low-cost, do-it yourself solutions. The students performed actual energy assessments on an existing home and last year’s HawCC Model Home.

The course culminated with the RESNET HESP Professional Exam on October 15, 2011. The HESP Course is one of many green technology classes being offered by OCET including; Intro to PV Design and Installation, Green Building and Energy Management, LEED Green Associate Exam Prep, and Natural Farming. The next Intro to PV Design and Installation and Green Building and Energy Management Courses are tentatively scheduled to begin in February 2012.
