Our campus recently hosted three candidate-finalists for the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Mr. Jason Cifra, Dr. Dawn Zoni and Ms. Hettie Scofield met with various constituencies on our campus. We expect to fill this position with a permanent vice chancellor effective February 1, 2012.

These sessions allowed for feedback and revisions of the Self-Evaluation of Educational Quality and Institutional Effectiveness Report. Kate Sims (Accreditation Liaison Officer) and Accreditation Co-Chairpersons Gwen Kimura and Joel Tanabe announced that the November draft has been posted on the Hawai‘i Community College Accreditation webpage. You are welcome to submit your comments, changes, additions or suggestions by December 15.

Mahalo to our faculty, staff and administrators who attended the annual JCC&IH A Taste of Hilo in October. HawCC has been a direct beneficiary of this fundraising event for 13 years.
During the 2010-2011 academic year, we awarded four $1,000 scholarships to students. Students receiving academic awards at the Student Recognition Ceremony in May also received a $35 KTA gift certificate.
Through the efforts of the HawCC International Committee to promote the Internationalization of Hawai‘i Community College, Pamela Scheffler received a $2,000 award to supplement her travel to the University of Zamorano, Tegucipalpa, Honduras, to discuss and arrange student exchange for students from the TEAM and Agriculture programs.
An award was also granted to create a mural to honor the knowledge and conservation practices of our kupuna to preserve native species. The mural will include images of native birds and will be a collaboration between the Art 107D (Photography) and the Art 123 (Introduction to Painting) students under the supervision of instructor Tobias Brill. Work on this project is expected to begin in early Spring.
This year, HawCC will once again receive $10,000 that will support our student scholarship program and college-wide services. Request for Proposals for College-wide Benefits will be announced in early January.
