The University Center, West Hawai‘i hosted the Kona Kohala Chamber of Commerce monthly After-Hours event on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.. Over 90 people gathered on the Kealekekua campus to socialize, sample tasty pupus, and learn more about the programs and courses available through the University Center. Faculty, staff and students shared information as participants walked the campus visiting classrooms, the science lab, and library/learning center.
Chancellor Noreen Yamane and Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Joni Onishi along with Interim Center Director Beth Sanders greeted guests during the walk about. Food was prepared by Chef Paul Heerlein, Chef Betty Saiki, and Advanced Patisserie students with their instructor, Chef Fernand Guiot. Other University Center personnel with key roles in the evening’s success included Ann Kern, Barbara Kuehner, Barbara Zazzi, Chuck Connors, Jim Lightner, Joeanne Losalio-Watson, Joe Wilcox with Space Grant traineeship students Kaya Ryan-Rolon and Daron Kirchner, Kalani Flores, Karen Au, Laurel Gregory, Lilinoi Grace, Lori Cecil, Pearla Haalilio, Peter Van Tuyl, Richard Stevens, Shanti Devi, Stan Cantor, Wendy Medeiros, and Willow Aureala. Special guests making presentations included UH Hilo College of Business and Economics Chair, Hank Hennessey and from UH Manoa’s College of Education, Karen Wilson. Door prizes furnished by the University Center for the event included four benches made by Construction Academy students at Kohala and Konawaena High Schools, University Center promotional items packaged with autographed books written by English faculty member Steve Cline and English lecturer Nancee Cline, and a native yellow hibiscus, ma`o-hau-hele, donated by Dr. Richard Stevens.
