Chancellor’s Message

Chancellor Noreen Yamane

Noreen Yamane, Chancellor

Aloha,

In alignment with UH Strategic Goal 3: A model local, regional, and global University– positioning the University of Hawai‘i as one of the foremost multicultural centers for global and indigenous studies, I will be conducting Wala‘au sessions with the assistance of Dr. Taupouri Tangaro, focusing on Hawai‘i Papa O Ke Ao, Creating a Model-Indigenous-Serving University.  Invitations will be sent to our various departments and units.  You are highly encouraged to attend these sessions with your colleagues.

Dr. Loretta Adrian, accreditation team chair, completed her pre-visit of our campuses on September 13 and 14.  She was accompanied by our accreditation liaison officer, Kate Sims during her visit to our West Hawai‘i campus and the future site of the Palamanui campus.  Accreditation co-chairs Gwen Kimura and Joel Tanabe joined our walking tour of the upper campus as well as the Manono campus.  HawCC’s comprehensive evaluation is scheduled for October 15-18.  Please be prepared to contribute when called upon.  We are planning a Kipaepae welcoming ceremony sometime during the afternoon on Monday, October 15.  Details will be forthcoming.

I am pleased to announce that effective Spring 2013, Erik Kalani Flores will be our new Accreditation Liaison Officer.  Mahalo to Kate Sims who will transition Kalani to his new assignment.

Dr. Jay Siegel, our consultant to develop the Hawai‘i Community College Palamanui 2013-2015 Academic Master Plan was introduced to our West Hawai‘i faculty and staff in August.  Meetings will be scheduled at our Hilo campus on October 10 for Dr. Siegel to meet with faculty, staff, administrators and community members.  Dr. Siegel will conduct meetings at the UH Center at West Hawai‘i on October 11-12.  These meetings and interviews will enable him to identify strengths and weaknesses of the College’s current planning processes as they relate to the academic programmatic offerings campuses that are provided by the UHCWH.

At the beginning of each academic year, all administrators, faculty, and staff are required to complete the Online Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Program at:

http://training.newmedialearning.com/psh/uhawaii/choice.htm.  Please complete the training by September 28, and send the printed certificate to my office via campus mail.

Mahalo,

Noreen Yamane

Chancellor
