Many Ha’akumalae events during last two months

Haʻakūmalae is the official orchestration of Hawaiʻi protocols leadership at Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center.

As an active member in our Hawaiʻi Community College and Hawaiʻi Island Community, there are many opportunities and events for engagement in these activities.

SEPTEMBER

  • September 5-7, 2012

Kīpaepae Welina & Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu: Hakuoh University

A Kīpaepae Welina was held in honor of the Hakuoh University Exchange Program students study tour that began on September 5th, 2012. The visiting 15 students and accompanying chaperone participated in a three-day English language and Hawaiian cultural study tour. They actively participated in their Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu on the Hawaiʻi Community College campus at the closure of their experience.

IUCN Participation

Unukupukupu was formally invited as official cultural practitioners to help represent Hawai‘i at the 2012 International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress (WCC) that was held in early September 2012 in Jeju, Korea.

Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu for Melany Ayudan

On Friday, September 28, 2012 a Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu (Releasing Ceremony) was held in honor of Melany Ayudan, former Secretary to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.  Melany has accepted a position with the University of Hawai’i at Hilo as Secretary to the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management and begins this new adventure on October 1, 2012.

Mō Ka Piko: New/Renovated Carpentry Classroom

A dedication and naming of the newly renovated Carpentry classroom (in Bldg390) on the Hawaiʻi Community College Manono Campus was held on Friday, October 12, 2012.

  • October 15, 2012

Kīpaepae Welina: Accreditation Team Visit

A Kīpaepae Welina was held on Monday, October 15, 2012 for the welcoming of the ACCJC/WASC Accreditation Team. The Accreditation Team visited from October 15-18, 2012 to allow for a comprehensive evaluation of Hawaiʻi Community College.

Hawaiʻi Community College is accredited by ACCJC, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

NOVEMBER 2012

NASPA Presentation & Kīpaepae: Waikoloa, HI

NASPA, NASPA is the leading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession in Higher Education. Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō presented at the 2012 NASPA Western Regional Conference on Thursday, November 8, 2012 through a shared Kīpaepae experience that includes the participation of faculty, staff and students of our Hawaiʻi Community College.

  • November 15-18, 2012

Wahipana Molokaʻi

Wahipana Molokai is a travel-based experience through the escorted interaction with wahipana, sacred places of Molokai, to inquire into the deep epistemology of Molokai as encoded in their island mythology. Wahipana Molokai is an approved activity of the Waihonua grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions grant.
