Ha‘akūmalae announcements

Haʻakūmalae is the official orchestration of Hawaiʻi protocols leadership at Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center. As an active member in our Hawaiʻi Community College and Hawaiʻi Island Community there are many opportunities and events for engagement in these activities.

Kīpaepae Welina: Japan Group Short-Term Educational Workshop

A group of 20 individuals from Japan came to visit Hilo to participate in a week long Educational Workshop. The group experienced Hula instruction with Hula Hālau O Ka Ua Kanilehua, a Hula Hālau of Hilo that is under the direction of Johnny Lum Ho. They also participated in Cultural Workshops here at Hawaiʻi Community College that included hei workshops, Wahi Pana of Hilo and kīhei instruction under the direction of Ryan McCormack & Jacqueline Van Blarcom. This wokshop occurred from February 4-8, 2013.

Kīpaepae Welina: University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents

Hawai`i Community College was host to a meeting of the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents Committee on Community Colleges and the Committee on Planning and Facilities. Our visitors were greeted with the pahu (drums) & pū (conch shell) through the participation of faculty, staff and students of the college. The event also involved the demonstration of the hei “ʻO Wākea no iā Papa” and the mele composed by Dr. Taupōuri Tagarō,  “Lei O Hilo”.

Kīpaepae Welina: Kamehameha Schools

A kīpaepae was held to welcome representatives of Kamehameha Schools to our campus. They met with the Hawaiʻi Community College Administrative Team to discuss future endeavors between our institutions. Discussions included new educational partnerships, Native Hawaiian student statements on their experiences at the college, Native Hawaiian student enrollment, retention & achievement and future plans for college program enrichment.

Merrie Monarch Festival 50th Anniversary – Kīpaepae Welina

This year commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festical held annually in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Haʻakūmalae in conjunction with Keaukaha community schools & group, Hawaiʻi Life Styles track faculty & students and Unukupukupu will be welcoming our worldwide community for the festivals this year. Please join us Sunday, March 31, 2013 at 9am at Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium.

April 2013

Merrie Monarch Festival 50th Anniversary

This year commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festical held annually in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Throughout the first week of April 2013 there will be events, fairs and hula occuring all around Hilo. Numerous groups, including Unukupukupu & Haʻakūmalae, will be actively engaged throughout the week. Please join us in participation and celebration of this wonderful event.
