Haʻakūmalae announcements

Haʻakūmalae is the official orchestration of Hawaiʻi protocols leadership at Hawaiʻ i Community College and the University of Hawaiʻ i at Hilo’s Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center. As an active member in our Hawaiʻi Community College and Hawaiʻi Island Community there are many opportunities and events for engagement in these activities.

Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu for Mary Goya, Hilo, Hawaiʻi

Māweke, Hilo, Hawaiʻi

Māweke is a rites of passage for graduates done during sunrise in Hilo. This ceremony moves to gear graduates, family, and community towards the opening to the door that ushers the student to a graduate. It is held at Mokuola the island of life, the traditional grounds of the māweke here in Hilo. This is an annual event held for participating college and community graduates and has been hosted by the Hawaiʻi Life Styles program for the last 16 years.

Māmoe, Keauhou, Hawaiʻi

Māmoe, a rites of passage for graduates done during sunset in Kona. Symbolic of the closure of one avenue of learning and the awakening into a new, deeper consciousness laid before not only the graduate, but the families and communities they serve in. This is the 1st year this ceremony has occurred and plans to be a continuing annual event for our West Hawaiʻi community.

Hawaiʻi Community College Annual Model Home Blessing 2013, Keaukaha, Hawaiʻi

ATE: Applied Technical Education student construction.

A ceremony to open and bless the annual model home was held at the closing of our Spring 2013 semester. The home was constructed as a culmination of the ATE program students & instructors’ skills and learning in conjunction with DHHL as an opportunity to gain valuable experience through contributions to our local community.

The Edith Kanakaʻole Multi-Purpose Stadium played host to commencement activities as it has for numerous years. Many bore witness to our grduates at this years commencement.

West Hawaiʻi Commencement, Waikoloa, Hawaiʻi

West Hawaiʻi Commencement activities for this 2012-2013 Academic School year will occurred at the Hilton Waikoloa.  En route the sacred wahi pana (pulsing places) of the journey were shared and an orientation and instruction in the W. Hawaiʻi campus song, “Nāʻū e Pālamanui” was shared.

ʻEli Hōnua: Pālamanui Groundbreaking, Pālamanui, Hawaiʻi

The West Hawaiʻi Campus site was recognized and honored in a ceremony for the upcoming construction. This Groundbreaking Ceremony took place on the site and was attended by faculty, staff, community and elected officials alike.

A small group of representatives of our Hawaiʻi Communuty College ʻohana attended the Smithsonian folklife festival this year as participants versed in the active culture and life styles in use of Hawaiian language.

Yurihama Cultural Exchange 2013, Japan

Unukupukupu has been fortunate to be invited to return to Yurihama: Tottori Prefecture, Japan for their 2013 Annual Hawaii Festival as participatory delegates and performers from Hawaiʻi. This week long event encourages the growth and sharing of hula, music & the culture of Hawaiʻi with Japan and its people. An event embraced and enjoyed by Japanese from far and wide.

Cultural exchange with Mr. Yoshida & the Gagaku-dan (the ancient court music orchestra) and their Miko (maiden dancers).

A ceremony to open and bless the annual model home. This home is constructed as a culmination of the ATE program students & instructors’ skills and learning in conjunction with DHHL as an opportunity to gain valuable experience through contributions to our local community.

iHaʻakūmalae: Wahi Pana o Kahaluʻu, Oʻahu

An academic immersion and professional development sponsored by the Waihonua Renovation Grant. A group of 19 individuals traveled to Bishop Museum and through the Koʻolau region of Oʻahu in reflection and implementation of technology. This travel was implemented to access the wahi pana of Kahaluʻu as it relates to the passion and culture that moves us to pursue our journeys in the educational system as students, faculty and staff.

Fall 2013 Hawaiʻi Community College Welina Event, Hilo, Hawaiʻi

​This kīpaepae took place in honor of our students and their journey of learning with our institution. As preparations for upcoming Fall semester this event included student & family orientations, program information and lots of fun for all.

Kīpaepae Hoʻokuʻu for President MRC Greenwood

A releasing ceremony was held in honor of MRC Greenwood. This ceremony was to recognize not only her service to the college but as a form of closure to this journey for all. Her visit included treks into the wahi pana of Mauna Kea and Hilo alike.
