Summer Career Explorations Program gives high school students preview of college

Summer Career Explorations delivers insight into the career field students are most interested in pursuing, allowing them to really determine if their dream job is the right job. But more importantly it shows them the value of continuing their education and enrolling in college whether it be here at Hawai’i Community College or another college within the University of Hawai’i system.

Students who participate in our program will receive either 0.5 or 1.0 high school elective credit, depending on the class in which they enroll. Every course is designed to be hands-on and very interactive. Courses offered in Hilo are Electronics (students take home a walking bipedal robot) and Health Care Occupations (students receive CPR certification and valuable skills to use at home). We are also offering a pilot program focused on the Marine Industry in Kona, this program was designed based on feedback we gathered through more than 100 surveys that were distributed to Kealakehe High School students.

We want to thank the Electronics, Nursing, and Marine program for partnering with us to provide such wonderful options and opportunities. Course dates and locations are as follows:

Hilo:

Electronics: June 2-16 (no class on June 11)

Health Care Occupations: June 2- 30 (no class on June 11)

Kona:

Marine: June 16- 27 (Space is still available).

The Office of Continuing Education & Training is always looking to partner with other programs to offer a course as means to funnel more students into the college and work toward greater retention rates in programs. Please contact Tiana at x2696 or tmkoga@hawaii.edu
