The Hawai’i Life Styles Program facilitated a Māmoe sunset ceremony, pictured above, in Kona on Friday, May 3, 2013.

Aloha,

For the last 15 years we have facilitated a sunrise ceremony on Moku‘ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo to celebrate the dawning of a new period in the life of our learners and their families and communities. In the past, we would bus West Hawaiʻi graduates to Hilo to participate in the Māweke Sunrise Ceremony.

The Māweke sunrise ceremony was held at Moku’ola on May 2, 2013.

But this year we started a new tradition and facilitated the first Sunset Ceremony in Kona called Māmoe, which was held at the Kahalu‘u Heiau on Friday, May 3. Part of the growth is recognizing that the sunset is as important as the sunrise and Kona’s celebrated phenomenon is the sunset.

Māmoe means, in short, “In the State of Dreaming.” Dreaming continues to play a large role in the mission, vision and goals of our communities. And as the college journey is but a portion of manifesting the dream, the Māmoe is a celebration of knowing that after graduation, the learners are equipped with the skills, content and tools to manifest their personal and collective dreams. We celebrated this on a sacred platform we know as heiau.

In the spirit of Māmoe, I encourage members of our Kauhale to use the summer to think, reflect, rejuvenate and dream.

Mahalo,

Tangarō

Hawai‘i CC has continued to make significant progress in pursuing its international education goals. The International Education Committee couldn’t do it without the support of Hawai‘i CC students, faculty, staff, and the local community.

The International Education Committee is particularly grateful for the support we have received from the Hawai‘i Community College’s administration under the leadership of Chancellor Noreen Yamane.

Mahalo for Study Abroad Support

Steven Clements is our Hawai‘i CC Study Abroad contact. Through his efforts, we have had a number of campus visits by representatives from organizations offering study abroad scholarships and other opportunities such as the Freeman Foundation, Fulbright, Honda, and Hakuoh Study Tour.

In the Summer of 2012, Hawai’i Community College Nursing major, Carly Vierra was awarded the Harris Wofford Global Service Fellowship. The Fellowship award allowed Ms. Vierra to travel to Cape Town where she spent three weeks as a volunteer.

Agriculture student Lori Bothwell traveled to Honduras for a 10-day intensive workshop in sustainable agriculture at Zamorano University. This was a Study Abroad course developed by Dr. Pamela Scheffler of Hawai’i.

In Fall 2012, two Hawai’i Community College students were chosen to receive Freeman Foundation Scholarships. Amy Hinton and Ty Widhalm spent the summer at Kapiolani Community College taking intensive courses in Chinese language and culture. Both of them then studied in Shanghai, China for the Fall 2012 semester.

A Hawai‘i CC West Hawai‘i student was awarded the Honda scholarship for Study Abroad in Europe in summer 2013.

Hawai‘i CC student, Kara Nelson will go on this year’s 10-day Hakuoh University Study Tour to Japan in June.

Several Hawai’i CC students applied for the Freeman Japan Program for Summer 2013 and are awaiting to hear the results.

We would like to thank the many faculty who opened their classrooms to these representatives and who encouraged their students to apply. In addition, we would like to thank Debbie Nakagawa and Karen Hayashida from the UHCC System Office for their support of study abroad.

For more information on Study Abroad at Hawai‘i Community College, check:

The Intensive English Program (IEP) is an accredited non-credit English as a Second Language Program which functions as an entry-point at Hawai‘i Community College for
international students. The IEP provides intensive English language training to students who do not meet the Hawai‘i CC admissions requirements for English
proficiency.

Almost 90% of the international students taking courses in degree programs orginate from the IEP.

IEP currently has students from Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Chuuk.

The IEP relies heavily on campus support to ensure that our students have a rich, cross-cultural experience. Luckily for us, our college is made up of a Kauhale of faculty and staff who have embraced our international students and made them feel welcome and included on our campus.

We would like to offer our most sincere and grateful MAHALO (in no particular order) to:

The Learning Center for opening its doors to IEP students and for making them part of your ’ohana

Dr. Yumiko Ohara (UHH) for overall support of the IEP’s mission and for allowing IEP students to visit her classes and interact with her students

Ke’ali’i Lilly for opening up the Hawaiian garden to IEP students and teachers, and for instructing them on gardening and plants in Hawai‘I

The Halaulani Transfer Success Center and I Ola Hāloa for welcoming IEP students and offering them a place to study and hang out

Allan Okuda and his crew at the Hawai‘i CC Manono Cafeteria for the generous graduation luncheon buffets and welcoming atmosphere of the cafeteria

POM for going above and beyond to meet our well-planned and last minute requests

Neal Uehara and Media Services for helping us out with a smile for all of our events

Japan Club members for including IEP students

Dr. Richard Stevens (WH) for inviting IEP students to take part in tree planting volunteer opportunities with his students

Mauna Kea Visitors’ Information Services, Kim Brenton for coordinating volunteering at Mauna Kea

Dr. Yukari Kunisue (UHH) for allowing IEP students to be volunteer tutors in her Japanese classes

Earth Day Fair 2013 was a wonderful event which was held on the Manono campus. This was our 25th Anniversary with participation by 250 students, staff and faculty. It was better than ever and a great educational success. Hawai’i Community College generously hosted school students and the larger community to a joyful and enriching celebration of the natural world.

Thirteen schools participated and brought 43 classes on field trips arranged by our hard-working team. Over 1,000 visiting students, along with their teachers, chaperones and escorts, went to presentations and entertainment at the Cafeteria Stage area, exhibits on the lawn at the cafeteria and adjacent to Building 387, as well as other activities.

An especially big mahalo to Jodi Ariyoshi and Amy Hinton, who made the school outreach so successful; Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers for organizing the entertainment and providing customized itineraries for each school class; Graceson Ghen for the Exhibit Coordination; Thatcher Moats for the poster design; Claudia Wilcox-Boucher for coordinating the student volunteers escorts; Amy Hinton, Ulu Langford and Claudia Wilcox-Boucher for volunteer check-in and T-shirt distribution; Kimi King for parking; Donna and Monique Hoke for coordinating the videos; Donalynn Saragosa for coordinating refreshments; Helen Tak for running the Earth Fair booth and Lisa Adams for efficiently taking care of all financial paperwork. Kristine Kubat really worked hard to make this a zero-waste event.

Special thanks to our presenters Jessie Law – “Life Cycle of a Plastic Bottle” and Derek Kirisu “Mountain Apple Man.” The students really enjoyed these presentations. Behind the scenes were Craig Mori from Pacific Sound and Neil Uehara with additional technical support. Special thanks to the Student Life Coordinator Larissa Leslie, Emcees Petey Kulberg and Pomai Williams from KWXX, Laura Brezinsky – Hawai’i Community College service learning and Marcy Martinez – Student Government, both sponsors of the event. Our hardworking crew of volunteers provided lemonade, ice tea, cookies, bananas and snacks to the visitors. Mahalo to Bill Affonso and his staff for providing us with the logistical expertise needed to prepare for this event. Our greatest appreciation to the hard working maintenance and facilities set up crew, to Allan Okuda for allowing us the use of the cafeteria, Island Wide Canopy Tents – Brian Hatayama, as well as Gene Harada and Joel Tanabe for the use of their canopy tents.

Mahalo to Bill Affonso for opening the Earth Fair, and special thanks to the wonderful entertainers: Unukupukupu, Kua O Ka La Public Charter School performance, the Japan Club performers, the Bayanihan Club, Billy Rodrigues-Kaiwa, Positive Motion, FICA Capoiera, Roxanne Lawson and her Pa’ani Puppet Show, Tupalaga O Samoa the Samoan Club dancers, Hawai’i Community College Trash fashion models Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers, Laura Robinson, Mandy Lui, Eve Teeter-Balin, Anthony Santoro, Shawna Hiatt, and Erica.

Mahalo to the Environmental Videos team leader, Donna and Monique, while Keali’i provided interpretation of the Hawai’i Life Styles garden. Plants were grown and donated for the Native Plant giveaway by the Forest TEAM students, Laura Brezinsky, and Native Plant giveaway coordinator Orlo Steele. Chris Jacobson and the agriculture students donated many edible herbs as well.

Students were treated to Phi Theta Kappa’s Environmental Storytelling, organized by Karen Crowell and Kenoa dela Cruz. Other favorites were Face painting led by Mandy Lui and Jebe Pacris. Our greatest appreciation to the hard working set up and banner crew, Graceson Ghen for the exhibitor coordination; Candy Apple Bananas-Mike Tarring for donating 20 cases of bananas. Hawai’i CC custodial and maintenance staff for the take-down and clean-up at the Cafeteria and Hawai’i CC fair grounds.

Thanks you to the Hawai’i Community College administration, Chancellor Noreen Yamane, her secretary Doris Chang, Iris Mukai and Debbie Shigehara from OCET for their support.

Faculty and staff who provided volunteers were: Bill Affonso, Orlo Steele, Sandy Claveria, Sam Giordanengo, Giordanengo, Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers, Allie Atkins, Claudia Wilcox-Boucher, Chris Jacobsen, Sherri Fujita and Hawai’i Life Styles.

Guests at a fundraiser that will benefit the new Hawai’i Community College — Pālamanui campus were treated to a special award-winning meal by current and former students of the Hawai’i CC culinary program in West Hawai’i.

On Thursday, May 2 at the Club at Hōkūli‘a in Kealakekua, “Team Pālamanui” presented the menu that won the Bronze Medal at the American Culinary Federation Student Culinary Competition held at Kapiolani Community College in December 2012. This dinner for 50 guests was a benefit for the Equip the Kitchens campaign that is raising money for Hawai’i Community College — Pālamanui, the new campus planned for Kailua-Kona. The fundraising campaign is run through the ACF Kona Kohala Chefs Association 501c3 charitable organization.

Team Pālamanui includes four current students and one recent graduate student of Hawai’i Community College — West Hawai’i. All are members of the ACF Junior Chefs of the ACF Kona Kohala Chefs Association.

Viktor Schmidt, CEC, the Executive Chef at Sheraton Kona Resort, was the Team Coach, and Jean Hull, CCE, was Team Manager.

It has been a longtime dream of Chef Jean Hull to have students who win a culinary competition deliver the menu as a dinner. The 50 guests at Hōkūli‘a gave the students a long, standing applause at the end of the dinner. They were thrilled with the delectable flavors of each menu item and the flawless presentation.

Hull believes this is the first time students have actually presented the skills, flavors and plate presentations to the public following an American Culinary Federation culinary competition.

Hōkūli‘a, an upscale private residential golf community, is to be applauded for hosting this benefit delivering all of the proceeds from ticket sales to the Equip the Kitchen Campaign for Pālamanui. One guest was so impressed she wrote an additional check for EKCP for $1,000.

KONA — More than 80 youth, ranging from pre-school to seniors in high school, signed a promise to stay in school, graduate and attend college as part of an exhibit presented by the University Center, West Hawai‘i.

UH Center, West Hawai‘i made the push to keep kids in school during the West Hawai‘i Earth and Ocean Family Fun Health Fair held in Kailua-Kona on April 20.

The free community event, recognizing Earth Day, was presented by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Kealakehe High School, West Hawai‘i Community Health Center and the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant.

“This was a great event overall, and we were happy to be able to deliver our message about the importance of education,” said Beth Sanders, Interim Director of the UH Center, West Hawai’i. ”We hope that as these kids promised to stay in school, it impressed upon them just how significant education is for their future.”
