Hawaii Okinawan Restaurant Project Exhibit at Honolulu Hale

The following event announcement was made by the Okinawan Festival.

“The Hawaii Okinawan Restaurant Project documented over 325 restaurants in Hawaii owned by Okinawans. This remarkable story is told in an exhibit on display at Honolulu Hale (530 S. King Street) from January 19th to February 8th.

1) The Oroku Restaurant Exhibit – Learn the story of Ushi Takara of American Cafe and the 74 restaurants owned by Hawaii Okinawans from Oroku village in Okinawa.

2) The Hawaii Okinawan Restaurant Project – Learn about the over 325 (and counting!) restaurants owned by Okinawans in Hawaii. Find out how you can help us grow the project!

3) Hawaii by Food Exhibit (part of Smithsonian Museum’s Key Ingredients tour, courtesy of Kapi’olani Community College – Learn about Hawaii’s unique food history.

4) Take a photo sitting at Columbia Inn’s iconic roundtable and stools! Gene Kaneshiro brought one of the original roundtables and stools for people to take photos at!!

NOTE: There will be a Closing Reception on Thursday, February 8th from 4 pm to 6 pm at Honolulu Hale!

The event, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts, is free and open to the public!”

The number of tourists in Okinawa continue to grow: record high in November 2017

The Okinawa Prefectural Government (沖縄県文化観光スポーツ部) released the data of the number of foreign and domestic tourists to Okinawa in November 2017.

The statistics shows the increase/decrease from the previous year (2016), and the nationalities for the foreign tourists. All data is written in Japanese.

Meanwhile, Nansei Shoto Industrial Advancement Center (一般財団法人南西地域産業活性化センター) released new data on population increase in Okinawa Prefecture. Their data state that more and more foreigners live in Okinawa.

This report says the largest increase was made by the residents from Nepal (in straight blue line).
