Okinawan Textile Lecture by 4 artists from Okinawa

The Okinawa Collection at the UH Mānoa Library, the Center for Okinawan Studies (COS) at the UH Mānoa, and the Department of Art & Art History at UH Mānoa co-sponsor an Okinawan traditional textile lecture on Thursday, August 9, 2018.

Okinawan Textile Lecture

  • Title: Okinawan Textile Lecture: Traditional Dyeing and Weaving Techniques
  • Date: Thursday, August 9, 2018
  • Time: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
  • Location: Hamilton Library Room 301
  • Speakers (4 textile artists from Okinawa):
    • Mieko Taira (芭蕉布/Bashōfu)
    • Hiroko Matayoshi (読谷花織/Yomitan hanaui)
    • Machiko Miyagi ( 琉球絣・南風原花織/Ryukyu kasuri, Haebaru hanaui)
    • Okishige Maeshiro (琉球藍染/Ryukyu aizome)
Four Okinawan textile artists will speak their dyeing and weaving techniques and history behind the tradition. The artists will come from Okinawa and speak in Japanese. Their lecture will be translated into English by Eric Wada, an artistic director and co-founder of Ukwanshin.

Registration is not required.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Hamilton Library does not allow food inside. Bottled water and water in a personal mug with a lid are allowed.
