2018 Legacy Award by Hawaii United Okinawa Association

The Hawai’i United Okinawa Association (HUOA) is going to host its annual Legacy Award ceremony on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom.

This year’s award recipients include Thomas Tarō Higa (比嘉太郎), who was “a 100th Infantry Battalion veteran who conducted a lecture tour between June 1944 and January 1945 under the sponsorship of the War Relocation Authority (WRA), the Department of the U.S. Army, and the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) to combat rumors that Japanese American soldiers were being used as human shields.”

Another recipient is Dr. Satoru Izutsu, retired Vice Dean of JABSOM (John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai’i). Dr. Izutsu is “a graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute, University of Hawai‘i, Columbia University, and Case-Western Reserve. Dr. Izutsu is a licensed Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, and Nursing Home Administrator.”

In January 2018, Dr. Izutsu received a medal, “Order of the Rising Sun” from the government of Japan for leading the University of Hawai’i aid to Okinawa.

50th Anniversary UH-Chubu Program Celebration (video recording of the event)

Several video recording of the 50th anniversary celebration of the UH Post-Graduate Medical Education Program at Chubu Hospita, Okinawa, became available.

The event was held at the Center for Korean Studies at UH Manoa campus on November 5, 2017.

“The program begins with Keynote Speaker Dr. Kaoru Ashimine, Director of the UH Postgraduate Medical Education Program at Chubu Hospital. Other speakers include Dr. Satoru Izutsu, Vice Dean of JABSOM, Dr. Junji Machi, Kuakini Medical Center, Graduate of the Program and Current Professor of the UH Postgraduate Medical Education Program at Chubu Hospital. And Ms. Ann Ito, Director of the UH Mānoa Kōkua Program. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is going to acquire a copy a commemorative book on the 50th anniversary from the Chubu Hospital.

UH-Chubu Hospital 50th Anniversary Event

The University of Hawai’i-Chubu Hospital in Okinawa’s 50th Anniversary Event will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Center for Korean Studies.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of UH’s collaboration with Okinawa Prefectural Chubu Hospital. To enhance the workforce of physicians in Okinawa, UH was recruited at the request of the U.S. Army and State Department to introduce a U.S. style postgraduate clinical training program. As a result of the collaboration, the program has helped train hundreds of physicians for the islands of Okinawa and neighboring archipelagos of Miyako and Yaeyama Islands. Please join us for this anniversary to commemorate one of UH’s longest and most productive international collaborations.” (from the event announcement)
