“Award-winning student lenses focus on rare Hamilton Library collections”

“Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is home to a multitude of rare books, archival materials and special collections that attract researchers from around the world. So what better way to acquaint UH Mānoa students with these unique and valuable resources than to invite them to make videos about their favorite collections?”

The winning videos

The $500 first prize went to “MAGIS: A True Treasure” by Jonas Gutzat, Yudai Kojima and Jacob Hensley, whose video conveyed the restoration of historic maps after a 2004 flood devastated the basement of Hamilton Library.

Second prize of $200 was won by Sophia Whalen for “Kajadifu,” which incorporated the Academy for Creative Media major’s whimsical animation to highlight Hamilton Library’s Okinawan Collection.

The $100 third prize went to the team of Dezmond Applin, Keahi Delovio and Nicole Huber, who featured UH’s connection with famed late artist Jean Charlot.

Music Performance: “Mimi-gusui: Life Sustenance through the Ears”

What: This“Mimi-gusui: Life Sustenance through the Ears” talk story concert led by Norman Kaneshiro, Musical Director, Ukwanshin Kabudan Ryukyu Performing Arts Group is in conjunction with the gallery exhibition, Ayanuji 綾虹Okinawa’s Traditional Culture: Past and Present.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

“Nabbie’s Love” will be played at the East West Center at UH Mānoa Campus

The Japanese film titled Nabbie’s Love (ナビィの恋) will be played on Sunday, December 4, from 2 to 4 PM at the East West Center’s John A. Burns Hall (1601 East West Road, Honolulu, HI).

According to the East West Center, the film is about “life in a small Okinawan community depicted through the story of a local grandmother, her grandchildren, and a young Japanese visitor.”

Japanese with English subtitles, 92 minutes.

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

The showing is in conjunction with the gallery exhibition, Ayanuji (綾虹) Okinawa’s Traditional Culture: Past and Present.
