Students from Idaho and New York escape the snowy winter and enjoy a semester of sunshine through A Semester in Hawai‘i. Click on the links to learn more about what Sarah and Caitlin enjoy about Hawai‘i.
Sarah Johnston: I’m a nursing major from Buffalo, New York, and I attend St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York.
Caitlin Stagg: I’m from Boise, Idaho, my major is journalism, and I attend the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.
Favorite Form of Social Media
Sarah: Hand written letters! I love getting mail; it’s exciting to open the mailbox and find letters or packages. My birthday is this weekend, and I’m expecting 2 packages!
Caitlin: Tumblr – I post mostly pictures.
Sarah: My greatest adventure was driving across the country twice, from New York to California, down to Alabama and back up to New York. I’ve seen almost every U.S. state.
Caitlin: Travelling to Costa Rica for a service project. We stayed on an indigenous reservation and built new bathrooms, fences, and other facilities for an elementary school. The Costa Rican government does not provide service to the reservation, so they are lacking in many things. It was interesting to see the differences between the big city of San José with all its conveniences and the reservation with so much poverty. I definitely want to go back and do more projects!
Sarah: I’m a huge animal lover and want to take home every stray cat or dog that I see; so my dream job would be to take care of animals – as a vet, dog-walker, anything!
Caitlin: Fashion photographer. My mom has a nice camera, and I’m always playing around with it.
Sarah: To work in the ER or Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit.
Caitlin: My long-term goals are unknown at this time!
Favorite Thing to Do at Home
Sarah: We live on Lake Erie in New York, so I like to go wake boarding and water skiing.
Caitlin: In Idaho I like to go see movies with my friends or take road trips on the spur of the moment.
Favorite Thing to Do in Hawai‘i
Sarah: Hiking is one of my favorite things to do in Hawai‘i.
Caitlin: Go to the beach with my friends; we like to watch the surfers and body boarders at Sandy Beach. The water is so rough there, and it’s amazing to see them ride the waves.
Favorite Hawai‘i Place
Sarah: Any place with a view from high up; I love seeing the island and ocean spread out for miles. I can’t wait to hike Koko Crater.
Caitlin: The beaches, especially Lanikai Beach. The sand is so fine.
Favorite Local Food
Caitlin: Malasadas from Leonard’s; my friends and I go to Sandy Beach and eat an entire box!
Favorite Hawai‘i Tradition
Both: The warm Hawai‘i greeting, with a kiss on the cheek.
