Dalai Lama and Other Notable Visitors

Students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have the opportunity to hear the Dalai Lama speak when he visits Honolulu in mid April. There will be two talks, one for high school and college students entitled, “Educating the Heart”, and one for the general public, “Advancing Peace through the Power of Aloha”. Tickets may be purchased through the Pillars of Peace Hawai‘i website.

The acclaimed Japanese novelists Haruki Murakami will speak on April 10 at the Campus Center Ballroom, at 7:30 pm. Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Murakami, who has gained an international following with his daringly original fiction, will read the short stories “The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes” and “The Mirror” from the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

His many awards include the 2006 Franz Kafka Prize, the 2006 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the 2009 Jerusalem Prize and the 2011 Catalonia International Prize.

In March, Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz and two-time Pulitzer Prize Award winner, National Book Award recipient and U.S. Poet Laureate from 2010-11 W.S. Merwin spoke at UHM.

Lots to do other than the beach here at UHM!
