UH Cancer Center grand opening

We officially opened our University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center on Saturday, February 23. About 300 people attended the blessing and grand opening. UH Mānoa Chancellor Tom Apple emceed the program, which included remarks by Cancer Center Director Michele Carbone, Nobel Laureate and friend Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Chief Executive Officer at American Association for Cancer Research Dr. Margaret Foti and Immediate Past President of the American Cancer Society Dr. Phil Evans.

Following the program, Irene Hirano Inouye and I untied the maile lei, as UH Mānoa Chancellor Tom Apple, Ken Inouye, U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa, UH Cancer Center Director Michele Carbone and former UH Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw looked on. The untying of the the maile lei symbolized the official opening of our UH Cancer Center.

Many UH Cancer Center faculty and staff joined us for the grand opening, as did state lawmakers and the community. The self guided tours of the state of the art facility were quite popular, as was the science fair that featured health related exhibits and activities for the children. What a great day.
