Association of Public Land Grant Universities meeting

I am in Washington, D.C. attending the APLU (Association of Public Land Grant Universities) Summer Council of Presidents meeting. The council presented me with a Waterford Crystal award for my service to the APLU executive meeting. I served as chair-elect this year and would have moved to chair if I had not retired as University of Hawaiʻi President. To my knowledge, this is the first time anyone from the UH has served on APLU‘s executive committee.

Randy will assume the chairmanship when I step down.

This is the larger group of APLU presidents at this Summer Council of Presidents meeting. We discussed a number of important issues such as the upcoming federal budget, indirect cost rates, new models of student centric advising, funding for veterans and public access to federally funded research. This will be my last APLU meeting before I retire.
