The graduation cooler is an SLS tradition where we come together to congratulate the students who have earned their degrees.  

 

COST

Free for SLSSA members; free for graduates and their family members; free for faculty, staff, and their families; $5 for guests.

The Bley-Vromans have kindly made their home available for this event.  Please follow THESE DIRECTIONS carefully so that we don’t disturb their neighbors.

 

WHAT TO EXPECT

Lots of tasty food, a ceremony to honor our graduates, fun times and decompressing from the long semester!

SLSSA November  POTLUCK Cooler and Lawn Sale

Friday, November 16th from 4:30-6:30 PM 

At the NFLRC Lanai

This will be a great chance to:
  • Relax!!
  • Meet and socialize with current students, faculty, and staff of SLS
  • Enjoy potluck-style food!
We highly encourage attendees to bring a snack, appetizer, main dish to share!
Anything is welcome, SLSSA will provide non-alcoholic drinks!  
BYOB as you prefer!
 
This event will be free for SLSSA members, faculty, and staff ($2 for non-members and guests).  Please RSVP at the following link as soon as possible. It will be a great help for our planning!
 
 
Also, in collaboration with the cooler, the Fundraiser VPs would like to hold a lawn sale!  If there is anything you don’t want anymore and you are looking to get rid of, but is still in good condition, please consider donating it to the lawn sale!  Everything will be by donation and all donations will be for SLSSA.  Please note that if your item is not bought, we ask that you take it back home with you.  If you would like to donate anything to the lawn sale, please sign up in the “Food and Lawn Sale Donation Sign Up Sheet.”  There are two tabs on the excel sheet: Potluck or Drink Items and Lawn Sale Items.

Family (kids, humans and furry-friends alike) are welcome! We’ll do our best to offer a variety of gluten-free and vegan options, but please let us know if you have any specific allergies.

In addition to food, drinks, spooky movies, and great company, we will also be hosting…

Costume Contest & Baking Contest!

This year we will host a Costume Contest featuring prizes for the Spookiest costume, the Best Linguistic Pun, the Best Couple costume, the Best Overall, and the Best Improvised (=a costume made from our box of fun)! 

Additionally, since we have a number of wonderful bakers in our departments this year… we would like to invite everyone to challenge their treat-making talents and bring some tasty morsels to share as part of our second annual Hlloween Baking Contest! The winner will receive a Ghould Food Award prize plus bragging rights.

IF you would like to donate materials/clothing for the improvised costume competition, please drop them off in the box by the computer in the reading room (and specify if you’d like them back after!).

IF you would like to participate in the bake-off, please bring a sweet treat on the day of event to possibly win a prize!

 

November 2018 Academic Event

Session title: “Tech Tools for Grad Students” featuring Dr. Dongping Zheng
Description: Join us on Friday November 16th, 2018 at 4:00pm in Moore Hall room 155A (to be confirmed) for an information session presenting an array of useful tools for graduate students. This session is designed to introduce a variety of applications and software that graduate students may find helpful or essential during the tenure of their studies at UH. The highlight of the session will be faculty guest speaker Dr. Dongping Zheng’s overview of the (free) Mendeley reference management software. Other tools to be presented include apps for collaborating on group tasks and projects, and media editing software. A reference guide for a variety of other useful apps will be provided via a handout at the info session and made available electronically on the SLSSA website. After the session, please join the SLS department at our November cooler!

DESCRIPTION

The Second Language Studies Student Association (SLSSA) is proud to host our first joint undergraduate-graduate cooler and introduction to graduate life. From 5:00pm to 6:00pm we will be having an informal Q&A session with current graduate students about the life of an SLS graduate student, as well as information about successfully applying to the graduate program. Following this, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, we will be having a social event where you can enjoy free pizza and board games courtesy of SLSSA! Come hang out with your SLS ‘Ohana! 

COST

Free for SLSSA members and undergraduates; free for faculty, staff, and their families; $5 for non-SLS guests and non-SLSSA members.

 

DIRECTIONS

Go to the 4th floor of the 

Queen Liliuokalani Center for Student Services building

and turn right. The room is the last on the left.

Fall 2017 Retreat

Aloha SLS ‘Ohana,

The Fall 2017 SLS Retreat will take place this September 16th at White Plains Beach. With the date on the horizon, we want to notify you of important information regarding the retreat. We ask that you read this email in its entirety to be well informed and prepared for this annual event!

Everyone attending the SLS Retreat must RSVP by Monday, September 2th so that the SLSSA Planning Committee can finalize all food and transportation arrangements before the date of the retreat. Please complete the following form to RSVP for this event.

Fees for SLS Retreat

In order to provide the best experience possible at all of our SLSSA events, it is essential that we include a fee to offset the costs of each event. The SLS Retreat is the only event for which SLSSA Members pay a fee, which comes at a discounted rate. Please see fee options below. The Fall 2017 SLS Retreat Fee can be paid when boarding the SLS Bus or upon arriving at the Retreat location. All payments must be made with cash or check (checks must be made out to SLSSA).

  • Faculty/Staff + Family: Free

  • SLS Grad Student, SLSSA Member ($10)

  • SLS Grad Student, Non SLSSA Member ($15)

SLSSA Auction

We encourage every member of the SLS Community to submit an auction item. Remember, the more auction items we have, the more money we can fundraise for our departmental research and travel grants. Please complete the following form with information of your auction items. You can find suggestions and guidelines for the auction by clicking here.

This year, SLSSA is requesting that all auction items be paid for following the conclusion of the auction. Therefore, you must bring your check books or cash to pay for auction items you buy.

SLS Retreat Itinerary and Transportation

Transportation on bus is optional and will be provided for all attendees. The bus will leave Moore Hall at 9:00 AM. All wishing to make use of this option will return to Moore Hall at around 6:00 PM, following the conclusion of the SLS Retreat. Individuals may also opt for driving their own cars to and from the retreat location. A map to the site will be coming soon.
