SLSSA-LSH Halloween Party

What should you expect?
  • FOOD AND DRINK.  Your SLSSA and LSH representatives will provide food and beverages for the event.
  • COSTUME CONTEST. The categories will include scary costumes, homemade costumes, linguistics/SLS pun costumes, couple/group costumes, and “I threw this on at the last minute” costumes.
  • GAMES.  Enjoy Halloween classics such as the doughnut-on-a-string game.
  • PUMPKINS.  Decorate your own pumpkin to take home with you.
Feel free to bring significant others and family members!

RSVP Now for 2013 SLS Retreat!

Aloha SLS Faculty and Grad Students!

We hope you are all having an excellent start to the new semester!  We would like to welcome you all at this time to attend the spectacular, unforgettable, annual SLS Retreat hosted by SLSSA.

This year’s retreat will be held:

Saturday, September 21st at Kapiolani Park (site #5, see attached map)

Registration will open at 9:30 am.

Cost (pre-registerd with RSVP – can pay day of): $5 for SLSSA members, $10 for non-members
(no-RSVP) $15 day of*

RSVP now for a lower price (you can still pay day of – cash or check – but we need numbers to know how much food to order!):

Attached is a schedule of events to follow.  As always, there will be games and activities designed to “break the ice” and introduce everyone.

There will also be a 3 part academic panel with invaluable information shared by our wonderful faculty and program directors on topics including: employment and GAships, socializing into SLS, and a general Q & A session with faculty members.

Finally, there will be a fantastic lunch and the annual auction with creative items and amazing events offered by members of the SLS ohana to raise money for our research and travel funds.

The retreat is a great way for you to meet everyone in the department and for us all to have a good time together outside of the confines of Moore Hall!

Fall 2013 Welcome Cooler

Aloha everyone,


Welcome to those of you new to the department and welcome back to those of you returning from summer vacation!


The Second Language Studies Student Association (SLSSA) would like to invite everyone to the annual welcoming cooler on


Thursday, August 22 at 4:00 (right after the new student orientation)
on the NFLRC lanai (just behind the Center for Korean Studies)


Come for delicious food, cold drinks, and fun meeting and socializing with new students, current students, faculty, and staff of SLS!  Everything is free, compliments of SLSSA.

Welcome Cooler

SLSSA would like to congratulate and welcome all
 of the newly admitted Ph.D., M.A. and A.G.C. students into the SLS
 Department. The purpose of the cooler is to provide opportunities to mix
 and mingle with your professors and peers, utilize the resources that
 are available to you as a student, and of course, to have fun!
