Kaka’ako swept by HCDA

Our slide show features pictures taken on Tuesday March 15th, 2011, following the full-scale sweep of the homeless population in the Kaka’ako area that took place close to the Medical School earlier that morning. The long stretch of road previously lined with rows of tents  was transformed into vacant rows of grass with just a few straggler tents and a few remnants of the once prominent homeless population.  Pictured are some of the City and County of Honolulu clean-up crews who were contracted to cut the grass along Ilalo Street and clean up the trash that had accumulated in the area. The Hawai’i Community Development Authority (HCDA) performed the evictions, with Department of Public Safety Sheriffs standing by in case there was trouble. There wasn’t any.  Both HCDA head Anthony Ching and State Homeless Coordinator Marc Alexander are keeping in touch with John A. Burns School of Medicine Dean Jerris Hedges, the medical school’s department heads and security team, to assess what the next steps might be.
