The University of Hawaii Board of Regents is recognizing the extraordinary teaching gifts of two faculty members of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). The pair were presented Regents’ Medals for Excellence in Teaching on September 27, at the UH Convocation Ceremony at Mānoa’s Kennedy Theatre.
Professor John S. Melish has taught every student graduating from JABSOM since 1979, and he has had an expansive and profound impact on medical education and healthcare in our community.
A professor of medicine with a subspecialty in endocrinology & metabolism, Dr. Melish has a deep commitment to educating the finest physicians for Hawai‘i and the country. This has been achieved through Melish’s leadership in the change from faculty-examination oriented training to student-patient centered and competency-based assessment of student learning.
As a physician and a teacher, he has exhibited an extraordinary level of subject mastery, scholarship, teaching effectiveness and personal values.
Dr. Abby C. Collier is an assistant professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine and Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
She is a dynamic and charismatic communicator who possesses a gift for making complex and abstract subjects accessible. Collier is able to fuse creativity with logic and encourages her students to develop original approaches in their own work at the bench.
She also engages in community outreach to recruit high school students into her laboratory each summer and into the Science Fair each fall.
Collier believes that “when a professor teaches in a classroom or laboratory, this not only benefits the student but also strengthens the community.”
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.
