Faculty and staff at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) just set a new record for their fourth annual Internal Giving Campaign, “Starting from the Inside Out.”

Under the leadership of campaign co-chairs, Dr. Richard Kasuya, Associate Dean for Medical Education, and Dr. Keawe Kaholokula, Chair of the Department of Native Hawaiian Health, 194 faculty members and staff made gifts totaling $137,660.  With the addition of Dean Hedges’ matching gifts of $20,000, total gifts exceeded $157,660, an increase of 13.8% vs. 2010.

Pledges and gifts were made to 58 different UH Foundation accounts which benefit JABSOM.  The five funds with the most number of individual donors each earned a $1,000 matching gift. Winning funds were the following:

  • Medical School Development Fund
  • Department of Native Hawaiian Health Enhancements Fund
  • Rural & Neighbor Island Medical Education Support fund
  • Sim Tiki Simulation Fund
  • Geriatric Education Fund

In thanking this year’s donors, Dr. Kasuya and Dr. Kaholokula noted, “As co-chairs of this year’s campaign, we appreciate the willingness of our faculty and staff to invest in the future of JABSOM.  By choosing to invest in ourselves, we send a powerful message to our community partners about our belief in our mission and our ability to fulfill it.”
