COMMUNITY: This weekend in KAILUA-Helmet give-aways continue in effort to reduce head injuries

(Filed April 20, 2012) Members of the John A. Burns School of Medicine’s clinical MD faculty have been taking part in public drives this month aimed at reducing crippling head injuries among moped, motorcycle and bicycle riders. Part of the effort includes drawings to give away free helmets. Last week, The Queen’s Medical Center and others presented such an event, at the University of Hawai`i athletic complex. On April 22, at the “I Love Kailua” event on Windward O’ahu, Castle Medical Center is leading the charge.

“From the Hawai`i-Pacific neuroscience perspective, concusion is one of the most common neurological disorder we see at our center,” said Dr. Kore Liow, JABSOM Clinical Professor of Neurology with the Hawai`i Pacific Neuroscience Center. “Yet many of these can be prevented with simple things like a helmet. We are thrilled and honored to partner with Castle Medical Center to make our community a safer place by giving away free bike helmets to our keiki.”
