Dr. Angel Yanagihara of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai’i is getting more attention for her groundbreaking studies into box jellyfish venom.
Dr. Yanagihara, a veteran of NOVA, The National Geographic Channel and many other news specials and reports, was interviewed by Bradley Cornelius of WAMC.org, for that public radio station’s “Academic Minute”.
WAMC, in New York, reaches listeners in radio’s largest U.S. market.
Dr. Yanagihara, Director of the Pacific Cnidaria Research Lab and an assistant researcher with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center, discusses what makes the box jelly venom so deadly. Her lab’s current objective, WAMC reports, is the systematic biochemical and pathophysiological characterization of novel toxins and bioactive compounds from venomous marine invertebrates.
