We did something NEW this year for Match Day 2013 at the University of Hawai`i John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). We streamed live via Ustream as our students opened the envelopes, allowing people outside of the ceremony to watch the chicken-skin moment of jubilation from our TWITTER @uhmed Feed! On Match Day, 25 women and 30 men in JABSOMʻs 4th year MD class ripped open envelopes from the National Resident Matching Program, to learn where in the U.S. (including Hawai`i) they would begin their careers as MDs-in-Training.
Match Day is a pinnacle moment for our awesomely smart and witty fourth-year medical students, 90 % of whom are from Hawai`i. The Class of 2013, who will receive their MD degrees in May, have spent a lot of travel time this year (and cash out of their own wallets) interviewing at medical centers around the country to apply for post-MD “Residency” training slots. Through JABSOM and the Hawai`i Residency Program, we have more than 225 residency slots here at home, in 14 medical specialties.
