Racing to class in wet board shorts from a favorite surf break near campus and taking notes on a surfboard to study later when back in the ocean waiting for waves. Where else but JABSOM?
Prompted by the nostalgic fragrance of plumeria lei sent from home, MD alumni shared memories like this at a series of dinners hosted by Dean Jerris Hedges for JABSOM `ohana members on the mainland. Many recalled favorite professors; some regaled the group with tales of hard-fought student basketball and football tournaments, and others entertained with stories of hilarious classroom and clinical incidents. Almost all talked about the quality of the clinical skills and preparation JABSOM provided, giving them a solid foundation before residency training.
In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of JABSOM’s founding in 2015, Dean Hedges and Directors of Development Jeffrie Jones and Elaine Evans have traveled this academic year to reconnect with John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) graduates, friends, and supporters in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco, San Diego and Phoenix.
Meeting JABSOM alumni has been a tremendous pleasure – not just because they are a fun group of folks, which they are! – but because their accomplishments serve as an important gauge of JABSOM’s success as a medical school. By this measure, and after having met more than 60 alumni in the past six months, it is clear that JABSOM has been very successful.
These visits also gave Dean Hedges an opportunity to thank mainland alumni for serving as trailblazers, ambassadors, and advocates for JABSOM. He told them, “During the nearly 50 years since its founding, JABSOM alumni have demonstrated through their intellect, hard work, and compassion what fine physicians JABSOM prepares. You have paved the way for our students in residency and fellowship programs across the country – and for this we owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude.”
An introduction to the recently launched JABSOM Online `Ohana web site highlighted the San Diego and Phoenix gatherings. Alumni there learned how to access the much-anticipated Online Directory, MD Jobs In Hawai`i and Class Notes sections of this secure, password protected online community.
Each evening concluded with video highlights of Reunion 2012 and a warm invitation by Dean Hedges to return to the JABSOM Kaka`ako campus on July 27 for this year’s reunion, RECONNECT 2013.
