THERE’S A FLURRY of action at JABSOM between now and September

It is time to mark your calendar to keep up with a busy July through September at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM).

Our third-year medical students, the University of Hawai`i’s MD Class of 2015, have already started the sometimes frantic, always exhausting and extremely beneficial learning experience in their Clerkship Training. The next two years will take them far and wide on O`ahu and beyond as they learn by watching our faculty work at patients’ bedsides, and in examination suites, operating rooms and delivery areas. From morning rounds to medical procedures to bringing new Hawai`i citizens into the world, our third-year medical students will see it all.

Our MD INTERNS AND MD RESIDENTS (post-MD trainees from Hawai`i and the world) have begun their duties on-the-job at our training partner institutions. Years of 80-hour workweeks lie ahead for them.

The week of July 8, a new SCIENCE IN ACTION course featuring high school students gets underway, sponsored by JABSOM and the UH OUTREACH COLLEGE.

The following week is the arrival brand-new MEDICAL STUDENTS entering the Class of 2017. They begin a week of orientation on MONDAY, JULY 15.

On FRIDAY, JULY 19, the new class members recite the Oath of Hippocrates and get cloaked in their learning jackets at The White Coat Ceremony at the Kaimukī High School Auditorium.

On JULY 26, the `Imi Ho`ōla Post-Baccalaureate Program celebrates its 40th anniversary in a special program at the Wai`alae Country Club.

On JULY 27, it’s the MD Alumni Reunion at the Kaka`ako Campus, as our medical school builds toward its 50th anniversary in 2015. The day includes a CME (Continuing Medical Education) Session, and the evening “RECONNECT” pūpū and entertainment event on the JABSOM lawn.

On AUGUST 9 at 5:30, `Imi Ho`ōla welcomes its newest class in an Open House, greeting college graduates from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds or communities who have been chosen to earn admission to medical school through a challenging one-year premed course.

On SEPTEMBER 3, the second-year MD students return to JABSOM, bringing our MD student body up to full strength. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to take part in HAT DAY on that Tuesday (the day after Labor Day) as we welcome them back by “tipping our hats” to the Class of 2016.
