Almost 300 MD alumni, residents, faculty, faculty emeritus, and staff from eight different states and Saipan attended “Reconnect 2013″, the MD Alumni Reunion at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in July, including a big showing from the Class of 1988, who were boogieng in a conga line by the end of the night.
Organized the same weekend as the `Imi Ho`ōla Post-Baccalaureate Program’s 40th Anniversary Gala, many alumni made time to attend both evening celebrations as well as a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on campus on Saturday morning.
Friday evening’s `Imi Ho`ōla 40th Anniversary celebration was organized by the Friends of `Imi Ho`ōla and featured remarks by its president, Dr. Malia Lee; `Imi Ho`ōla Program Director, Dr. Winona Lee; Dean Jerris Hedges, the Honorable Jim Burns, and many others. The program honored many of the key supporters and contributors to the success of this post-baccalaureate program, including Dr. Nanette Judd and Dr. Ben Young.
One of the big highlights of Friday night was Dr. Ben Young’s talk about the history and evolution of the `Imi Ho`ōla Program and the contributions made by each JABSOM dean to the program over the years.
Another heartwarming highlight came from the remarks of Dr. Rakhi Ram, JABSOM Class of 1976 alumnus and a former Dean’s Program student. Dr. Ram and his wife, Mary Ann, shared why they recently created a new endowment to benefit the `Imi Ho`ōla Program and its medical student alumni, in appreciation for the opportunity it gave Dr. Ram of becoming a physician.
On Saturday, the CME, organized by the 30th and 25th reunion classes of 1983 and 1988, was offered free of charge, thanks to generous corporate support from HMSA and The Queen’s Medical Center. Participants heard from eight different alumni speakers from throughout the nation and Hawai`i.
Saturday evening’s “MD Reconnect” featured musical entertainment by JABSOM medical students and alumni, food stations throughout the grounds of the medical school and tours of the new UH Cancer Center facility.
Reunion 2013 was truly a weekend to re-connect!
Looking ahead, we’re preparing a video story about the event for next month’s eNews.
Mahalo to Jeffrie Jones and Elaine Evans for this story!
