IN THE NEWS: UHMed jellyfish expert Dr. Angel Yanagihara assists Diana Nyad in historic swim

Intrepid biomedical researcher Dr. Angel Yanagihara of the University of Hawai`i Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine, helped swimmer Diana Nyad make history this week. The 64 year-old Nyad swam solo across the channel from Cuba to Florida. Dr. Yanagihara is one of the world’s top experts in box jellyfish. She developed an ointment she calls the “sting stopper” to help Nyad avoid the painful stings which thrwarted the swimmer’s previous attempt at the 100-mile crossing. Yanagihara, traveling on Nyad’s escort boat, would jump into the ocean to apply the ointment on Nyad during the treacherous journey, something captured and posted in a video embedded here from YouTube (just click the play button, above).
