HOLIDAY MAHALO: Crafts and goodies sold at annual event helped medical school homeless outreach

Mahalo to the customers and vendors who made the annual HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Craft Fair and Bake Sale on December 6 a success! The event also featured a “White Elephant Sale” with gently-used items.

This annual event supports our Hawai`i HOME (Homeless Outreach and Medical Education) Project, which since 2006 has provided free medical care to homeless citizens of O`ahu. UH medical students lead the clinics at four O`ahu homeless shelters and provide assistance to unsheltered homeless, offering care which includes:

• Management of acute and chronic health care problems
• Health maintenance/Preventive services
• Vaccinations/TB testing
• Laboratory testing
• Minor surgical procedures
• General physical exams
• Health counseling
• Medications for those without insurance
• Oral health assessments

The medical school’s partners in the HOME project include:
• H5 (Hawai`i Helping the Hungry Have Hope)
• Hawai`i State Department of Health
• US Vets
• Wai`anae Community Outreach
• Diagnostic Laboratory Services
• Institute for Human Services
