DEAN HEDGES HONORED by members of the Hawai`i State Legislature

Dean Jerris Hedges of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) has received signed messages of congratulations from members of the Hawai`i State Senate and Hawai`i State House, in honor of him being named the “2013 Physician of the Year” by the Hawai`i Medical Association. Dr. Hedges, who has led JABSOM since 2008, was recognized for his outstanding leadership during which the medical school has increased its MD class size, expanded MD student training to all major Hawaiian Islands, led faculty to increase competitive research grant awards by 58% in 2013, and presided over a period during which our MD students have — for ten years in a row — scored higher than the national average in the U.S. medical licensing exams taken by medical students at every US-accredited institution.

Dean Jerris HedgesAt the same time, photographer Arnold Kameda took the opportunity to get some fresh portraits of Dr. Hedges in his office at Kaka`ako. The statue he stands next to is — like all art throughout our campus — selected by the Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and periodically is changed.
