The Environmental Law Program (ELP) is building upon last summer’s inaugural youth outreach and engagement project thanks to two new 2021 ELP Summer Fellows: Jessica Lee and Kristen Lu.
Jessica Lee is a rising second-year student at Stanford University who is majoring in Political Science with a focus on International Relations, and pursuing a minor in Music as well as in Spanish. She is passionate about food sovereignty as well as environmental issues generally, and hopes to pursue law in the future as a means to engage in the effort to find global solutions to the climate crisis. Among other things, Jessica is hard at work with Our Drowning Voices, a youth-led coalition seeking to establish a Climate Change Commission within the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Kristen Lu is a rising second-year student at Claremont McKenna College, working toward dual majors in Government and Philosophy. Based on her deep concern about climate change, she is also working with Our Drowning Voices and hopes that the effort can encourage IUCN to take focused action on the climate crisis. Her additional interests include food sovereignty, immigration policy, and other issues relating to human rights. “I’m thrilled to work with the ELP this summer while continuing my environmental advocacy!” added Kristen.
It is a welcome sight when the next generation eagerly embraces the opportunity to advance environmental issues. By focusing their energies on the important task of youth outreach and engagement, Kristen and Jessica are helping to bridge the age gap between legal practitioners and younger advocates, while learning and teaching along the way. According to ELP Director David Forman, this year’s Summer Fellows have been “making important contributions to ongoing initiatives, for example, by pointing out when discussions about the interests of future generations lack substance, and suggesting more effective ways to connect with the next generation of environmental advocates.”
ELP would like to thank Jessica and Kristen for their hard work and their dedication to the environment. Both Kristen and Jessica are currently in Hawai‘i for the summer enjoying free time (when not engaging in their Fellowship work) and learning about local culture. Please join us in wishing them both success this summer and beyond!
