Where do I go if I need help?
The University encourages victims of violence to talk with someone about what happened so that victims can get the support they need and the University can respond appropriately. The Gender Equity Specialist provides advocacy services and information on UHM policies & procedures to UHM students, faculty, and staff experiencing gender-based discrimination, sexual violence, stalking, dating violence, or intimate partner violence. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has several campus resources available to victims and survivors of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and domestic violence. There are also local and national resources victims and survivors may want to consider contacting.
Will the process remain confidential?
While some victims of violence may be ready to file a formal (or even public) complaint against an alleged offender right away, others may want time and privacy to sort through their next steps. For some, having a confidential place to go can mean the difference between getting help and staying silent.
For those who desire confidentiality, there are resources available for confidential advice and support, including the Office of Gender Equity. For a list of confidential resources on campus, visit the Campus Resources tab.
A victim who at first requests confidentiality may later decide to file a complaint with the school or report the incident to local law enforcement, and thus have the incident fully investigated.
In contrast to confidential resources, formal complaint procedures require thorough investigations of all formal charges of sexual harassment. Formal complaint and investigation procedures will not protect the identity of the Reporting Party from the Responding Party.
Please remember that different employees on campus have different abilities to maintain a victim’s confidentiality. Before revealing any information, please make sure you understand the reporting obligations of the person you are speaking to.

What is Title IX?
Title IX is a landmark federal civil right that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Title IX is not just about sports; it is a prohibition against sex-based discrimination in education. It addresses discrimination against pregnant and parenting students and women in STEM programs. It also addresses sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination, and sexual violence. Sexual violence includes attempted or completed rape or sexual assault, as well as sexual harassment, stalking, voyeurism, exhibitionism, verbal or physical sexuality-based threats or abuse, and intimate partner violence.
Title IX does not apply to female students only. Title IX protects any person from gender-based discrimination. Cis, trans, nonconforming, and non-binary students, faculty, and staff are protected from any gender-based discrimination, harassment or violence.
