Mahalo to Academic Senate Chair

By Ellen Okuma, Academic Senate Chair

It takes a team to move things forward. I’d like to thank my Academic Senate leaders this past year’s service and for helping move several initiatives forward. Mahalo to Executive Committee members for being there at all of the Senate and Executive Committee meetings and for stepping up to the plate when needed: Manai Kalua (Vice chair, Humanities Rep), Eric Mecklenburg (English Rep), Sherri Fujita (GSSS Rep), Francis-Dean Uchima (Math & Natural Sciences Rep), Donala Kawa‘auhau (Secretary, Business Education & Tech Rep), Claudia Wilcox-Boucher (Social Sciences Rep), Joyce Hamasaki (Nursing & Allied Health Rep), Jim Lightner (Hospitality & Tourism Rep). Mahalo to Kate Sims (Chair, ad hoc General Education Committee) for leading the General Education Review over the past 2 years and to Sam Giordanengo (Chair, ad hoc Online Committee) for making progress in the development of draft standards for online teaching. Mahalo to Helen Nishimoto for once again doing a superb job of chairing the Curriculum Review Committee. Jeanne Ryan and Anne Chung (co-Chairs, Educational Policy Committee) and Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers (Chair, Faculty Policy Committee) deserve a big mahalo for leading the Senate’s other 2 standing committees. And a big mahalo to Donna Moore for continuing to oversee the development of Writing Intensive offerings as the Chair of the ad hoc WI Committee. A special mahalo goes out to all of the faculty who regularly attended Academic Senate meetings in Hilo, West HI and the Kohala Center.
