Chancellor’s Message

Aloha Faculty & Staff,

As Hawaii Community College celebrates our 70th anniversary this year, we will open the 2011-12 academic year with a dramatic 13.7% increase in student enrollment for the island.  We are looking at a record high of 3, 330 students enrolling in the 26 programs including Liberal Arts and our new Refrigeration and Air Conditioning program during the fall 2011 semester.  One of our programs, the Electronics Technology program, will be restructured during the year to better meet the needs of the industry.  Look forward to the “new” program in fall 2012!

We are happy to announce that our East Hawaii Culinary Arts Program was reaccredited by the American Culinary Federation, the Nursing Program received accreditation for a maximum of 8 years by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and the Children’s Center under the Early Childhood Education Program received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) until 2016.  These programs worked hard to meet industry requirements and standards.

Hawaii Community College is part of the Rural Outreach Services initiative which is a partnership between federal, state, county governments, and private non-profit agencies to provide access to government and community resources at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka`a.  Along with offering English 102 this fall semester, we will be taking our Student Services, Financial Aid and Office of Continuing Education and Training units to the rural community on a rotating basis.  In order to meet the ever-growing needs of our student population, both here on Hawaii island and on Kauai, Hawaii Community College proudly offers courses such as History, Psychology, and Substance Abuse Counseling.  These programs are delivered in person or via video-conferencing.

Noreen Yamane, Chancellor
